Speed Splinter Camo - A Tutorial

For fast, simple late-war German camo... It wont win awards but it will be quick to do. It took less than ten mins to do the camo on this guy and less than half an hour for the whole paintjob and base.

STAGE 1

GW Scorched Brown base colour on smock...

Image

STAGE 2

Vallejo Reflective Green 'splotches', random shapes and sizes as many as you feel is enough... and then add one or two more...

Image

STAGE 3

Vallejo German Camo Beige, more random splotches, place next to the green ones and then follow with groups of three fine lines ('raindrop pattern'), both onto the dark brown and the green. This will suggest the 'splinter' look... and thats it!

Image

FINISHED MODEL

On the finished model you can see the overall finish. It aint a medal winner, and it sure as hell aint 'accurate' but its quick and it 'looks' right on the tabletop.

Finally, apologies to Rob... I ripped off his lovely technique for splinter camo and turned it into the demonic speedy version... Sorry mate and thanks for doing the hard work for me!

Please do not copy this tutorial onto other forums without my permission... Cos it pisses me off!

Great tutorial. I think the impression of "sharp-edged" shapes is the key on 20mm (or smaller) figures. If you get that, the viewer's eye will do the rest.

Sorry but I feel that given the work and time spent doing tutorials such as these that they should remain for the benefit of Guild members only. Nothing personal to other forums but its my work, my time and no-one pays me to do it...

So cos of that, I stick them here and no where else as this place is my second home! ;)

Well, I admit I could have chosen other words to ask you "why" :blackeye:

If you want to be paid for them you should think about collecting them and release them as a download file that will cost people a donation to open. (I am serious - why not.)

Rob's version -(slow version - i don't do speedy!)

Image

Vallerjo british uniform base...
red brown splinter painted on...
then green (but MUCH less...)
then paint very thin stripes of iraqui sand over the khaki only...

looks a mess blown up - but looks ok from a distance...

I agree with the wanted tutorials, specially the last two.
On second thoughts: never mind the US uniform turning lead into gold is enough....

I did a speed paint test for Italian camo years ago... Turned out very well.

Sadly I dont have the figure anymore... I think I sold it with some other SS boys...

Will have a go at trying one out and see what happens. The Italian camo was quite easy to do from what I remember... Was just a case of getting the colours right more than anything.

Dont hold ya breath for it though... Baby not well so Im painting during the night while sitting up with her. :blackeye:
