Kampfgruppe Von Luck Counter-Attack

Postby prussianhussaruk » 18 Jun 2017

Having finally finished my German Recce battalion, we could at last play this scenario.

It is from the RF Blue D-Day Book and is scenario number 8.
As I played this part of the battlefield at the SoGGy Big Game a few years back, we used those updated orbats.

Image

The centre village is Herouvillette, the one to the right Ranville. The green wool marks the edge of the hills. The hill mark the wooded areas of those hills. (The marker to the right of the hill at the bottom of the picture, was my 17 pdr A/T gun).

Image

German forces lined up for the off. As this is an old scenario, we are using the template for all IDF.

Image

The only British forces on view are the Commando reinforcements who arrive on move 6.

Image

View looking south from behind Ranville.

Image

View of Herouvillette from the south east.

Image

21st Panzer lead with their recce battalion, but one of the A/Cs is knock out by a lucky shot from the Para mortars.

Image

One of the Sdkfz 222's pass through the village to attack the Paras mortar, unfortunately it gets a nasty surprise from a 6 pdr A/T gun.

Image

The 'T' junction to the west of Herouvillette, sees another recce vehicle knocked out by a lucky mortar round. This time a Sdkfz 250/9

Image

As the Germans had failed to observe the Paras in the village (poor dice throwing). The Paras chose their moment to open fire. The PIAT missed the Sdkfz 232, but the Paras had manged to knock out the crew of the Sdkfz 233. The lead Sdkfz 250/9 had poked his front to far out of the village and been heavily damaged by the Paras 6 pdr A/T gun.

Image

To the west of the village the Germans had decided to make a concerted move on the western hill.
Using the template for IDF was certainly causing some problems. A stray shell from the off-table Naval gunfire landed on the German AOP and knocked it out. This silenced the German artillery for a couple of moves, depriving the assault on the village the support fire they needed.

Image

The German response to the Paras had been swift. The garage was soon turned to rubble and the Paras began to take casualties. The PIAT had missed the Sdkfz 233 for a second time. The 6pdr had finished off the 250/9.

Image

One company of Paras change houses to avoid the German fire. The PIAT eventually heavily damages the 233, but the Paras in the garage are coming under sustained fire. The M/C company try to rush through the village in an attempt to get to Ranville.

Image

Over on the left, the German attack had gone in on the hill. The Panzer IV was knocked out by the defenders PIAT and one of the Sdkfz 250's by a long range 17 pdr shot. In the foreground the German BGHQ has arrived on table to control the German artillery.

Image

With the German attack on the western hill going well, the Commandos arrive and decide to dig in to protect the Orne River bridge.

Image

The German attackers pull back from the hill and let their artillery do the job. The AOP and one Para figure escape from two companies deployed here.
The garage in Herouvillette has been cleared.

Image

One of the German Sdkfz 250's makes it through the wood and attacks the Para mortar position behind. The Paras had already taken one morale test and the Germans want them to take another. Unfortunately they missed.

Image

A section of Commandos rush to the rescue.

Image

Having one Sdkfz 250 made it into the wood, the others and a Panzer IV attempt the same move.
The 'T' junction is the main target for the off-table naval artillery, which brings a steady trickle of knocked out German AFVs.

Image

The German break through is stopped by the Commnados. The 6pdr was no required. Big sigh of relief, as the Paras avoid another morale test.

Image

The two remaining Sdkfz 250s are knocked out by A/T gun fire from the left, only the CO remains from the whole Recce Battalion.

Image

The CO doesn't seem to be too concerned and passes his morale test.

Image

In Herouville, the Germans have started to clear the village with the add of their many AFVs. A Para company I sent down the left hand line of houses to knock out the Stummel, succeeded in their task, but they where now exposed to a lot of HE fire. My other company had moved to the back of the village in the hope they could hang on.

Image

The 6 pdr A/T gun from the right flank arrived in the nick of time to take out the Somua 75mm SP that was causing me so many problems.

Image

With the Somua knocked out, the Germans bring up an SP 150mm and it clears the last house in the village. Three German figures are the sole occupants of the village. The Para Battalion survives it third consecutive morale test.

Image

The Panzer IV by the garage, had engaged the 6 pdr in Ranville, only to miss twice and be knocked out by the first shot from the 6 pdr.
On the hill in the distance can be seen the last Panzer IV burning. Another victim to a long range 17 pdr shot.

Image

With all the German armour out of action, the Commandos decide to counter-attack and clear the hill.

Image

A company of Paras from Ranville join in the attack and the Germans are soon cleared.

Image

The Company of Pathfinders who had been defending Ranville, move to retake Herouvillette.

Image

With only a few support troops left, the German attack runs out of steam.

Image

The 'T' junction to the west of Herouvillette is a graveyard of German AFVs. Just as in the real campaign, the Naval gunfire was crucial to the defeat of this force. The British PIATs proved very unreliable, but the A/T guns did really well, firing from flanking positions.

This is the first time we have used the template for all IDF. It proved very interesting to start with and lead to a couple of friendly fire incidents. As the game wore on we got the hang of targeting and the Germans had a couple of very unlucky losses due to stray shells.

All in all a great game, that lasted 24 moves.

Big thanks to Rob for a great game and very good cake.

Fine toys, fine table and fine reportage, top stuff

We still use the template with RF2, with the exception of light mortars.

Big thanks to Don for an excellent game on Saturday, as ever the terrain and troops were the stars of the show. It was very close but the lack of infantry for the Germans proved the flaw as you need them to take buildings and hold them. It is a big ask for the Germans to take and hold 2 villages and the commando entry point but I am sure it can be done.

Great looking game.

It seems like a bloodbath - the Germans just died in numbers that would make even the Soviets shocked yet without any impact. But then that seems to be the actual reality of German troops from 1943 onwards!

To be fair, the Paras were in a pretty bad way as well. One was down to a company plus supports and the other HQ and supports. From what I have read the fighting around Ranville was very heavy.
