Arnhem Sept 19th battle in the town

Postby Ianwill » 21 Jan 2017

Hi all,

This scenario is a RF game designed for a club night or introducing someone to the rules. It is on a 5 by 2 feet table and lasts 12 moves. I tested it at my club last night and will test it again with a few changes to the German Orbat. Some of the terrain is card templates (tram line)
The scenario is based on the attempt by the South Staffs and the 11th Para to attack along the Utrecthseweg and break through to the Arnhem bridge.
To win the British have to move at least 8 figures to the other end of the road.
To win the Germans have to destroy/rout the two battalions
Any other result is a draw.
The first two turns are in darkness. Used night rule for observation and firing only.

Entering on turn one the South Staffs made good progress in the darkness
however in turn four they started to take heavy casualties from the Germans occupying the row of buildings opposite the museum.
On turn 5 the 11th entered the table as did the first German reinforcements which included a Quad SP which caused the Airborne a lot of trouble
The south staffs occupied the Museum and other buildings and were in a fire fight with the Germans. The 11th moved as quick as possible up the road.
The 6pdr ATs knocked out the 20mm SPO but missed the Quad.
On turn 8 the German Stugs arrived and things were getting pretty desperate for the Airborne.
The Germans counterattacked the Museum and after four morale throws the Staffs broke and on turn 12 the 11th also failed a morale test.
I will play this again next month with some changes to the German Orbat

Cheers

I think that is boring scenario. No place at all to any tricky move. You can only go and push, push push in one direction and pray for dice.
But table is very nice.

Hi,
Boring? Surprisingly no. We have played this three times( Germans won once, twice drawn) and it may be limited in terms of the options to manoeuvre but the game gave you a genuine feel of the desperate and ultimate tragic position the 1st Airborne found itself in on the 19th. This kind of game could be played with any rules, Platoon level, Regimental level, Chain of Command; Rapid Fire; Battle group; Blitzkrieg Commander or Bolt Action. How do you represent an attack on a narrow front. Most games are played on a 4 too 6 feet wide table. This was done in this game by restricting to only two foot wide.
This gives an almost claustrophobic feel to the game as though you are fighting in a tunnel. This represents the dilemma facing the 1st Airborne on the 19th who were advancing on a narrow front as they tried to force their way to the Arnhem bridge. The day was tragic for the British ending any hope of the rest of the 1st Airborne reaching Frost at the bridge.
Even though there is no room to manoeuvre there are options for both sides. In the actual battle the British were unable to deploy their Mortars of anti tank guns due to a combination of bad Comms. Heavy enemy fire and the close combat.
The trick for the British is how to use the available cover of the woods or building; how to deploy the support weapons; the use of smoke.
Even the Germans have a dilemma. To win the game they not only have to stop the British but break the British. So at what point do they stop being a blocking force and go on the counter attack.
What ever rules you play I recommend you give this or something similar a try.

Cheers
