Tank Aimed Fire: MG v HE - am I playing this correctly?

Tank Aimed Fire: MG v HE - am I playing this correctly?

Postby dead1 » 21 Apr 2017

Some thoughts after a game in which tanks slaughtered infantry with machine guns.

Turned out firing Machine Guns was a better option than High Explosive (HE) from the main gun in terms of main gun.

The MGs were not affected by movement or obstructions to target (HE is).

HE is a little bit more accurate than MGs if both target and firer are stationary and target is in open but is affected by modifiers from movement. HE also has an additional roll (explosion impact).

HE only gains an advantage at ranges longer than 30 inches as tank MG fire is limited to 30.

MG Aimed Fire
1. Observation roll
2. To hit (roll number of dice and consult chart. No modifiers).
3. Cover save and remove any casualties.

HE Aimed Fire
1. Observation roll
2. To hit (roll number of dice and consult chart. Apply modifiers).
3. If hit is successful, roll stated number of dice to specify impact of explosion (e.g.: 6/4+ which means 6 dice needing 4+)
4. Cover save and remove any casualties.

So a Sherman firing at obscured infantry (soft cover) in 10-20 inch range

MG Aimed Fire (Coax + bow MG = 6 MG shots
1. Observation roll against obscured infantry: 4+
2. To hit (6 MG shots requiring 4= to hit)
3. MAXIMUM NUMBER OF CASUALTIES: 6
4. EXPECTED CASUALTIES ASSUMING TARGET IS SPOTTED: 2

HE Aimed Fire (4/4+)
1. Observation roll against obscured infantry: 4+
2. To hit 3+ HOWEVER target is obscured so this becomes 4+ (same as MG) but only one dice rolled.
3. If hit is successful, roll stated number of dice to specify impact of explosion (e.g.: 4/4+ which means 4 dice needing 4+)
4. MAXIMUM NUMBER OF CASUALTIES: 4
5. EXPECTED CASUALTIES ASSUMING TARGET IS SPOTTED: 1

In the amendments to the rules in the new rules book, there is a modifier to samll arms fire if firer moved or intends to move.

Being obscured modifier doesn't apply to HE, only to AP. Also moving incurs -1 penalty for small arms. So you made couple of mistakes.

Still usually mg's are better from short distance and gun benefits from longer distances. Before the new rulebook gave small arms -1 modifier from moving, mg's were clearly superior. With current rules the balance is quite good and it's usually worthwhile to have some HE shells.

Not vital to buy the new rulebook the amendments have been made available on here and the battlegroup Facebook group although I've failed to find exactly where.

Success at last
