Question about ATG limitations

Question about ATG limitations

Postby dead1 » 11 May 2017

Not a criticism before anyone takes this as one.

1. Currently you can generally only buy 1 light/medium AT gun per infantry platoon (some exceptions like Soviets in BGK). Note these type of weapons were often assigned to infantry formations and also formed the large majority of AT assets at divisional level.

2. Heavy AT guns are often restricted but can be brought in larger numbers as specialist support than light/medium ATGs. These were often assigned in separate battalions within a division and were often not assigned to independent formations that were doled out to divisions/army groups as needed.

3. Self Propelled AT guns like Marders or M10s can also be brought in larger numbers (often as individual platoons under tank options). Most SP AT assets were available in smaller numbers than ATGs in most divisional level organisations A lot were assigned to independent formations that were then assigned to divisions/army groups as needed (especially in Soviet and German armies).

How come there's a limit on light/medium AT assets? Should they be available as a specialist support asset as well as infantry platoon support?

(Personally I just house play you can take more ATGs as a Specialist Support option if you pay the points for them without need to buy an infantry platoon).

Actually there are several cases where you can buy light / medium AT batteries as a specialist support option:

Panzerjaeger battery in BGBlitz: 2x pak36
Panzerjaeger battery in BGBarb: 2x Pak 36
PanzerJaeger Battery in BGBarb: 2 x pak 38 (panzer div only)
Panzerjaeger battery in BGWaR: 2x Pak 40 (Volksgrenadier list)
Russian AT gun battery in BGBarb: 3 (three!!) x 45mm AT guns

You can also buy a 45mm ATG battery in Kursk as well.

Anything Russian can still buy large number of ATGs even without access to a dedicated battery. I'm talking about on table ZIS-3 artillery batteries. Russians used ZIS-3 in a lot of AT units and even the artillery ones were used direct fire from what I've read.

Still your average Allied or German platoon can more easily load up on SPGs and heavy ATGs than lighter "regimental" ones.

It would be good idea to give option to field more light at guns from specialist support in future books. It certainly wouldn't be a problem from historical or balance point of view.
