Late war French NWE lists

Late war French NWE lists

Postby The Waxed Moustache » 02 Nov 2016

Just wondered about any ideas for composing such a list for French 1st Army 44-45 as I'm really tempted to spend some money.

From what I've been able to gather we're looking at infantry with bolt action rifles and Brens or BARs. Not sure on HMGs. I guess platoons/companies mirror the British model?

How about game-specific rules e.g. would they suffer war weariness like the Anglo-Canadian-American armies?

Armour/vehicles: see US lists. No Fireflies, but any 76mms or Jumbos by 1945? Perhaps the former but not the latter. I've also read somewhere that they had some Panhards and Char Bs back in action by the end.

I've no idea on artillery support or whether to match it with US or the British/Commonwealth lists. Comms like the Yanks or more like the Limeys?

Ditto for support and close air support.

Thanks in advance! :hello:

French re-organised based on the US system in `43, bolt action rifles mostly a mix of LMGs inc FM29 (not Bren), .30cal air cooled, BAR

76mm - yes (but fewer than US), no Jumbos

I wouldn`t both with older french kit unless you want an odd piece for flavour.

Less artillery than a comparable US unit same for comms, air support provided by allies

The French did press some older recaptured artillery back into service; I have a photo somewhere of a 155mm GPF back in French service in late 1944.

There are some nice reference works available. The Osprey Men At Arms on the French army in World war two is nice starter (you'll need the second one) and there is also a Histoire and collections book on the 'new' French army from 1943 onwards.

A short introduction on the French forces fighting in Italy

2Dle in Normandy and after is quite a nice unit to build - various Shermans & M5 stuarts (can Chasseurs d` Afrique), M10s (crewed by Fusiliars d`marine), recce units were Spahis cavalry, armoured infantry (Regiment de marche du Chad) included Republican Spanish (La Nueve).

Also had the unique 40mm Bofors SPAA GMC6x6

Many thanks for the responses so far! :good:

I've also been reading on Indochina and am seeing the potential to carry the list on to there...

Indochina orbats will be very different to NWE.

Groupe de marche units were very mixed - indiginous personnel + Legionnaires (very few former SS ;) ) + colonial troops from Algeria & Morocco - very few actual French regulars.

Ex-US kit - 1/2tracks, M8HTMC, M8 armoured cars, Chaffees, gun trucks (40mm GMC plus others) - some bren carriers at least one Sdkfz251 ;)

As the war developed the french formed para battalions - again very mixed

Riverine stuff is fun

Another great thing about building French armor for NWE 1944-45 is that almost any base model of Sherman (M4, M4A1, M4A2, M4A4, or even M4A3) can be used, as the French had some of all of them by the end of the war, even mixing multiple models with differing powerplants in the same unit.

P.S. - here is the lone French Jumbo mentioned above:
