British Infantry, Operation "Veritable" Feb 1945

British Infantry, Operation "Veritable" Feb 1945

Postby C_Collins » 02 Jan 2011

Hello all,

I had some Elheim 20mm Late war brits in windproof smocks kicking around and though this was a good time to have a go at them, these uniforms were fairly common from december '44, often seen during the lead up battles to Varsity, a particularly well known one is one called "Rushing through Flushing", where one tommy seems to have scored himself a Denison smock to go with the hooded smocks of his section mates. Of cause do you think i can find it online? There on the front cover of George Fortys British army handbook.

I had a crack at using sodium Bicarbonate as snow, but it looked a bit twee and out of characterfor my army, (not to mention i wasn't sure how it'd cope with changes in humidity) so I got rid of it. I'd imagine it'd be mostly muddy slush anyway by mid feb.

Enjoy

Those are lovely Chris - the camo is very effective and a nice muted tone overall to fit the time of year. Top job! :good:

Thank you gents! The windproof smocks that I've seen seem to have a more grey looking background colour than Denison smocks, though that could be batch variations so i tried to capture that look, it really helps to have brilliant figures to work with. :hello:

Really nice. I have my father's suit of windproof clothing issued for his ops around Antwerp. Your colours almost match his suit.

Well, they'll probably have no real specialist role unless I extract a digit and make a late war unit, the old 20mm map movement campaign i used to be involved with was based around "varsity" and so these lads wouldn't look out of place.

Oddly the term Fusilier seems derive from the use of the "firelock" (early flintlock), and were primarily tasked to escort artillery or keep the baggage train in order as you couldn't use a matchlock in the presence of open powder casks. From there the name stuck to various regiments. It also seems to have been used to describe dragoons armed with "firelocks". I don't think it (at least in the british army) denoted any Light infantry role, unlike say the Duram Light infantry or Royal Ulster Rifles. it must be the air of the "Plucky Brit" giving them the dash and Elan you mistake for specialists. (truth be told, they've just found out theres a pub nearby and they're of to investigate).

Thanks for the kind words folks!
