Auxilliary Barge Canal Defence
for 1938 British Civil War

Image
Image

After I joined The Guild I was interested in getting involved and doing something for the Afloat Groupbuild. However as I'm concentrating on building up forces for a 1938 British Civil War campaign based around Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire any thoughts of a large Mississippi paddle steamer or Pulp ocean liner (still projects for the future) were out. However, inspired by the Home Guard Trent River Patrol and some of the DIY armoured cars from a Berkshire jam factory , and thinking about what might have been useful and could have happened, I settled upon the idea of an armoured narrowboat that could be used to protect a riverine/canal force, providce support to repair crews removing obstacles across/in the waterways, and lastly give the ability of a waterborne faction to force their way through defences on the way to attacking Nottingham or Newark...

Image
Since not every game on the water would involve an armoured force (for instance the torching or cutting out of a supply convoy) I also wanted a reasonable force of narrowboats to be moored up in a marina or along the quayside so the armouring would have to be removable so the boat could double up in its usage.

The basis of the model is a 1/72 Craftline 70 foot Motorised Narrow Boat. However to make it useful for a wargame I made several modifications to the basic kit. Firstly the bow and stern areas have been made bigger in order to allow figures based on pennies to be able to stand up easily there.
ImageImage
This meant that the cargo area needed to be shortened and I added a slight rake to the cratch (bow) end as quite a few narrowboats on the river don't seem to have been totally square, and I wanted some differentiation from other models in the fleet.

As it was a wargaming model I also added some plasticard strips to the roof of the engine/galley area to give some 3D definition for the hatch runners. And then I added some of the side decoration that came with the kit and gave it a brown wash to darken it down. The kit comes with some sugar paper to give the tarpaulin covering for the cargo area, but I decided against adding this as I reckon a simple paint job would have matched better with the rest of the model. Then the hatch cover designs and cratch end decoration were added and painted over to provide a better colour match with the rest of the paint colours, and the white strap decoration for the cratch end of the cargo area added and painted over.
This completed the basic 'normal' narrowboat model.

Image
To provide the armouring for the basic model I then totally scratchbuilt a slip over casemate, 'bridge' and side plates for the tiller, giving an ACW armoured casemate/30s art deco sweep to the stern.

Gun ports were added to both sides of the casemate (Shades of Corporal Jones' butchers van from Dad's Army "Open 2, 3, BANG 2, 3, in 2, 3" :) ). and a couple were modelled shut to give some variety to the lines on either side.
Image

Armoured doors were added to the front of the casemate, and then the whole casemate section covered in 'rivets'. In 1/72 a lot of these are definitely overscale, but I wanted a home built or at least semi-professional feel to the armouring and produce something that the Newark boiler-works could have hastily constructed and launched down the side of the Trent. Hopefully the angling of some of the rivets captures this. A quick undercoat, base coat and then dark green wash completed the picture and then the finished A.B.C.D. can glide slowly and menacingly down the Trent. Just don't try and perform a quick turn in her and she looks a bit top heavy!

Looking at the completed model, in the future I'll probably add some sandbag defences to the bow area and the rear of the 'bridge', possibly a Lewis gun to the 'bridge' and maybe a sloped armoured mortar section to the front of the casemate(no traversing possible, just point the boat in the right direction!) to give some more gaming options depending on which faction is using the A.B.C.D. (or Canal Repair Armoured Boat if owned by the BUF/Edwardian forces).

Hope this model is of interest and you like what you see.

Good luck to everyone in the voting!

These look really good. I agree that the rivest are a bit big (have you looked and Archers 3D decals for rivets and weld beads?) but it still looks great.

Thanks!

I'll have a look at the rivet decals. I think there are about 160(ish) rivets on the casemate in total - or about 30 minutes cutting thin spaghetti to the right(ish) length, plus another hour and a half gluing and positioning them ;)

Thanks!

No point just hanging around mooching is there!

To be honest working on this has helped get me back into painting and modelling to put alongside the gaming and writing side of wargaming.

It reminds me of Sir Topham Hatt´s holiday with the grand children in one of the Thomas episodes. I never had thought of such a barge to do for the group built. Brilliant idea! It would have been one of the last models I had converted into a wargaming piece, but the 1938 ECW concept makes it logical. This alone deserves a vote already. :clapping: :clapping:
