Forward the Guards! – The Battle for Shufti Kuss

This is the second part of the Newbridge Gaming Club’s Desert War project and is the second of four games in the campaign. This game centres around the Guards attack on Shufti Kush. This game suppose the French held out in the first game (as they did in our club, well done Cyril!) but its easy enough to change the background to suit. If you want to give the Germans a bonus for winning at Fort Le Choux allow them a second tank company or a battery of artillery.

Following the successful defence of Fort Le Choux by French forces, the British now decided to launch phase one of their offensive earlier than had been planned. This was felt worth the risk in order to exploit the confusion and disorder inflicted on the German forces by their rebuttal at Fort Le Choux.

22nd Independent Guards Brigade was tasked with providing the spoiling, diversionary attack of the offensive, aimed at taking the small town of Shufti Kush. This would, it was hoped, draw troops and reserves away from the sectors facing 4th Indian Division and weaken the front allowing their main attack to penetrate the German defences. It would also prove a good vantage point should 4th Indian fail to break the German front and resources and reserves could easily be re-directed to the British at Shufti Kush allowing them to attempt a further breakthrough should it be needed.

However, the immediate task at hand was for the British forces to capture the town. Although well equipped with infantry and support, including the rest of the Free French forces in the area, the brigade had a lack of armoured support. With the operation brought forward several days, few of the designated armoured forces had been able to reach the sector, and in light of the recent German losses it was decided to push on with what was available and to capitalise of the disorder among the Axis command. Facing the British force was an under strength Italian infantry regiment, likely to be reinforced with some of the troops who had been rebuffed by the French at Fort Le Choux. Morale among the Axis troops was low, but it was assumed they would fight hard for this area of the front.

British forces, with a contingent of Free French would have to fight into the defended town and secure it before nightfall, destroying as much of the enemy strength as possible. Without the planned armoured component, this would prove a tough nut to crack, but not for the boys for 22nd Guards Brigade!

British Briefing

The British (and French) troops must clear the town of Shufi Kush within 12 turns. The British players receive 100 points at the end of the game if Sufti Kush is clear of Axis forces. British players also receive 10 victory points for every unit (company and equivalent) that is destroyed during the game (either by losses or routing).

Axis Briefing

Your forces are deployed to defend the area of Shufti Kush and the unexpected British counter-attack. At the present time the area is held by Italian infantry of dubious quality. To bolster this, command has despatched elements from the battle at Le Choux to reinforce the line. All efforts should be made to hold the town and stop the British advance, however if the outcome should be inevitable then the local commanders may withdraw to secondary positions further down the valley. Holding the town is vital, but should not be more important than maintaining our strength. At the present time, command is unsure if this attack is the main British offensive, or merely a diversion. We must maintain our troops for the coming battles.

Italian troops begin the game in positions in the town. German troops enter on turn 3 as designated. The Axis player receives 100 points if he holds the town at the end of 12 turns. If the town is disputed he gains 5 points for each unit in the town. From turn 8 the Axis player may elect to withdraw forces from the battle. This will secure 10 victory points per German unit and 5 victory points per Italian unit. This is to simulate the German command wishing to reserve as much power as possible for later battles. In this way the Axis forces may still achieve a victory, on points, if not on the table, and this should be viewed as the Axis forces maintaining a degree of strategic initiative in the campaign.

Axis Forces at Shufti Kush

Italian 19th Infantry Regiment

1st Battalion

HQ - CO + 6 figures (20mm A/T rifle)
3 Rifle Companies - 10 figures
Support Company - 9 figures, 1 x 45mm Mortar, 2 x HMG

1st Artillery Regiment

2 x 75mm Gun, truck

Battery - 2 x 100mm Gun
A/T Battery - 2 x 47mm Gun

Elements of Anti-Aircraft Regiment 18

2 Batteries - 1 x 88mm Flak Gun, 1 x 20mm AA gun

German Forces - From turn 3

1st Battalion, Infantry Regiment 104

HQ - CO + 6 figures, AT-Rifle and 50mm Mortar, Horch Car
1st Co - 8 Figures, Truck
2nd Co - 8 Figures, Truck
3rd Co - 8 Figures, Truck
MG Co - 9 Figures, 81mm Mortar, 2 x MMG, truck

Elements from 1st Battalion, Panzer Regiment 8

HQ - Panzer III, Panzer II, Panzer I
1 x Light Co - Panzer IV, 2 x Panzer III, Panzer II

Air Support

Due to the confused nature of the situation across the front the German player may roll 1D6 at the start of his turn. On a '6' a roving ME109 turns up and spends the next three turns over the table. This may occur once per game, and once it arrives no further rolls should be made. The German player may use the fighter for ground attack or air patrols.

British forces deploy below red line.

Initial defenders start in town or dug-outs.

Germam reinforcements arrive behind blue line on turn 3.

I also missed the troop ratings from the initial post!

British - Fire as regular, morale elite.

French - Fire as regular, morale elite

German - Elite

Italian - Fire as regular, morale green.

Now why do people always crap on the Italians? I think today's general perception of the Italians in WW2 is a little unfair. Great scenario though, looking forward to the report!

Cos they was crap? ;)

I always remember Churchills words regarding them and apply that.

Plus I follow the 'Hollywood' style of gaming in this campaign. The Brits are tough and drink tea, the French laze around in the sun and fight when the Germans threaten the wine store, the Germans are ALL Elite and the Italians get medals for making pizza for Unkle Donitz...

Now I feel I must jump to the defence of these lesser mortals, after all I have been doing that all my adult life.
The Italian OFFICER corps most definately fit that category. The Italian early war trooper was capable of putting up quite a fight and did on some occasions. But after the British started to get serious and the fighting went against them they did prefer to let the tedische do the fighting and then try to steal some glory, that or surrender and be sent to a place where they were garanteed food and NOT to be shot...... not so daft an idea.
So in to round this ramble up they were capable, they just couldn't be arsed :beee:

Hence my suggested rating... Fire as Regular, test morale as Green.

Seems to aptly fulfil their historical tendency at that time of the war.

I like that pulpy style as well, but in conditions of historical wargaming one could mark such as "fun gaming" perhaps? Just to avoid misunderstandings...

Why?

That is historical.

Im sorry but any gaming is fun, if you have 'serious' gaming then I dont want to meet the sad fucks that play that.

No wargame is serious... and anyone who thinks their games are a 'realistic recreation of military combat' has no idea what he is doing and should probably get out more.

I never want my stuff to appeal to the 'serious' gamers. But then I dont think I know any of those...
