An Easier Way; Foret L’Eveque; 1st Sept 1944

Postby Jezamonos » 25 Sep 2008

I've never written a scenario in my life but though it might be fun. This is based on the capture of a bridge that I found interesting. The german forces of exactly what fought are sketchy so a bit of artistic licence has been used and guess work from known units in the area.

EDIT: If anyone does play it, can they let me know how it works for them.

An Easier Way
1st September 1944
Foret L’Eveque, Souleuvre River

A Rapid Fire Scenario by Jez Harris

Background

By the end of July 1944, the two congestion points of the Allied advance, Caen in the east and St. Lo in the west, had been prised from a stubborn German grasp. To continue the advance, Operation Bluecoat would be launched at the end of July by VIII Corp’s through the dense bocage country. The 11th Armoured Division would be part of the operation with its two formidable assault brigades, the 29th and 159th, making good progress through Dampierre and on to the outskirts of St. Martin des Besaces. Though the initial advance had broken the crust of German defences, pockets of German resistance still picked at the British as they sought to move ahead.

On the morning of 31st, the 11th Armoured Division reconnaissance unit, 2nd Household Cavalry, were tasked with finding an opening in the German lines to further exploit with the armoured brigades. Scouting east and west of St. Martin and pressing south, Daimler armoured cars of C squadron came across an unguarded bridge at Foret L’Eveque, crossing the Souleuvre River. An unguarded bridge was a rare occurrence indeed, but what they did not know was that the area was the boundry line of the German LXXIV Corps and the II Parachute Corps. Even more astonishing, it was the dividing line between Panzer Group West and the Seventh Army. Neither group considered itself responsible for the area and as such, it lay totally unprotected to eventually be exploited by 11th Armoured Division. On receiving the communication from the Bridge, General Roberts (CinC 11th Arm’d) immediately sent elements of 2nd Northamptonshire Yeomanry and 4th Kings Shropshire Light Infantry to hold the bridge head and this was achieved by dusk on the 31st. The following day, the remaining units of 11th Armoured would push on to the bridge and begin the breakout towards Beny Bocage. The scenario covers the actions to reinforce the bridge by 29th Assault brigade and the counter attacks by 21st Panzer Division.

The Wargame Scenario

The game is played on an 8’ x 6’ table. Buildings start intact except for Les Houdant which is ruins. Woods are open. The river Souleuvre is not crossable by vehicles except at the bridge, infantry treat as a linear obstacle. Hedges are bocage. Corn fields provide soft cover to infantry but are not an obstacle to movement and do not restrict visibility. The game is 10 turns long. Turns 1-2 are at dawn; Use rule 20.14.

The Allies win if they control both Les Houdant and the Souleuvre crossing after 10 turns. The Germans win if they prevent the Allies from achieving all of their victory conditions. Any other result is a draw.

An objective is considered controlled if only one side has combat elements (not OP teams, abandoned AFVs or transports) deployed within 12” of the centre of the objective.
