Saipan WIP

Saipan WIP

Postby Bob_Mackenzie » 08 Aug 2008

Just a place holder for the references i will be using to construct mine

USMC history

http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USMC/US ... pan-3.html

Taki's excellent Japanese tank site. Although the above link gives a breakdown of the 9th Tank Regiment this is needed to get the Ratio of ordinary to Shinhoto Chi-Ha (there weren't many Shinhoto)

http://www3.plala.or.jp/takihome/history.htm

Modern Topo map of Saipan. This will give contours and foliage. Need to take one of the sketch maps from the history above to give a better idea of the buildings. I understand modern Saipan is much more built up than WW2

http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/topo/pac ... saipan.jpg

I need to track down which Sherman units were in the area. The history doesn't say beyond mentioning that the kills could have been bazooka, 37mm or 75mm

Cheers

Interesting project, Bob -- indeed Saipan-Tinian-Guam would make an interesting linked-up wargaming campaign (just as the real-life campaign was an interesting shoestring operation). I have a copy of Gilbert's book on USMC tank operations -- I'll have a look and see if I can help you on which units were operating in which sectors.

Don't forget the army history of the operation, Campaign in the Marianas:

This is a 43 map which gives a better impression of the size of the built up areas in WW2

Contemporary pic - not how much less forest there is than the modern map would suggest

Hey bob,
Do you have any pictures of the architecture on Saipan. Or even pictures of the common houses types in villages and main towns of saipan?
I want to get some houses but can't see for sure what would suit.

Cheers for posting all this, very helpful for me too ;)

Have a look through the links I posted - there may be a pic.

One description describes the outlying buildings of the towns as wooden with corrugated iron roofs. Other than that I have very little
