Painting cammo.

Painting cammo.

Postby mausmann » 13 Apr 2017

Okay, been umming and arrring about the crew for the A/T guns we have on the way. Managed to grab some random figures, and then thought that it was time to have a go at the AK interactive paints, sooo big boy pants donned and off I went.....

Didn't like the colors after I followed the guide...didn't seem right somehow... Struggled with the wash at the end, and none of the colors seemed like the pics on the box..... :banghead:

So, added a blackwash, and a coat of varnish and wondered what everyone thinks? Jury is out this end...... :this: Would be a whole lot better with some decent varnish, so need to order some to replace the crap I am using at the minute.
"And this too, shall pass away..."

It was a very old platitude, even then........

Looks fine John, i had the same problem and as the figure in the examples on the box is a 54mm,a different approach was needed, ,so i went back to my own method and it worked a treat.
I also paint 54mm figures for my own collection and have done so for years and they require a much higher degree of work

Yes no idea why ak continue to print the boxes with a colour chart that does not resemble the paints in the box... well most of them anyway and the painting guides are as vague as vague can be.

I think it looks good as a spring planetree pattern... dont give up on it until the fig is finished, what you think is dodgy looking camo doesnt really come to life until its surrounded by all the other colours.

As you know im no expert   but I would advise you to stay away from black as a wash, try different browns etc... or a stain such as strongtone from army painter.
The only thing to look forward to… is the past.

Cheers all, I'll do some more soonest, and try a different wash. I wasn't happy with the cammo in the first pic which was prior to a wash, as it looked too light.
After the wash, the cammo in the third pic looks too dark for me.....

I think top pic looks best, I used to blackwash everything back in the day, but begun to realise they looked like they had done a 12hr shift at the coal face

Just add some light skintone or similar to the base colour and slightly highlight it, makes a big difference, the greens dont really need highlighting.

What youve done looks a good planetree with the ratio of large dark areas and dots and bright areas and dots. :good:

From the second photo I would have said plantree - not sure if that was the style being tried.

But, I like it very much and would be very happy to have that on the table.

I found doing a wash tended to really dull down this sort of cammo. Two alternatives were no wash and brush paint a dark shadow in chocolate brown in key recesses, armpits etc, or, paint the cammo in brighter colours and then wash. While our greatly enlarged pictures here show off all the detailed brush work, on the gaming table the colours need to pop a lot more if all that hard work is going to be visible, it's always a tough balance. You've done a lovely job with that pea dot, it's a pity not to make it stand out more.

My workaround to the issue of washes killing Camo is to wash the base colour, then paint the camo pattern, then a quick highlight of whatever patches of base colour are left.

That said, that's Oakleaf. Your Plane Tree looks way better than my first go at it...

I was trying to emulate the guide on the box, but it may have morphed into a mongrel pea tree....

Think I got lured into the wash as the illustration is of a 54mm fig as Ray and Daryl said, but it didn't work. Too dark for sure.

the wash will tone everything down - fine on a 1/35th scale figure, but not as desirable on a 20mm figure that you want to "pop"...

Yep..... Think I forgot my own maxim of remembering that we game at 4ft length, not under a supermacrozoom lens.....

Had another look this morning, and I'm happy with the brushwork as in the size and frequency of dots, islands, continents etc. Just fecked it up with the wash......

Tbh, everything I paint looks a bit shitty at some point, doing 2 packs of ab at the moment and im sure the oakleaf is too "busy" and the peadot is not as nice as usual, but as ive said already, until the are completely painted you just dont know for sure.

Re: Painting cammo.

Postby panzerfaust200 » 21 Apr 2017

things are coming on - i wouldn't worry too much about whether it looks like plane-tree or Oakleaf, just go with something that looks right, the best thing is to sturdy a section of cloth, then work out what parts of the pattern are easier to reproduce - then have a go at that...

oh and i put my shadows in on the base colour, then plan the darker "land masses" around those...
but simplify the colours too - you want them to "look" like SS in SS camo, not actually represent the pattern, so simplify colours and shapes ;)

i like the colours for planetree...
Image

but prefer the oakleaf pattern...
Image

actually - looking at mine now - i suppose they are more planetree than oakleaf... meh... as long as they look like SS who cares?
