Gunbirds 20mm Galore - 26-6-2017 30 Days over!

Postby Gunbird » 02 Oct 2016

Right, after a long time away I have come to the conclusion it is time to get my 3 German armies for Early, Mid and Late War done (I'll ignore Afrika for now). The focus is on the Battlegroup set of rules, with a core of 1 platoon with all the support options and a light selection of armour and support units. Since I have no opponents I'm doing this purely for myself. There will be no real order that I can think of, I'll do what fancies me, be it have enough troops and vehicles for a scenario, or a kit I found while rummaging in my stash.

Right now it's time to create another Frankenstein.

Image

Today, at the Scale Model Challenge in Veldhoven, Holland, I picked up 2 trade kits, 2x Hasegawa Jagdpanzer IV 70(V) Lang with a tuned barrel in each box. (unfortunately, what the seller had failed to mention is that 1 kit has been started and all the steel roadwheels are missing. He first blamed Hasegawa for a packing error, then admitted he had started it. He is sending replacement steel wheels. So kids, when trading, always open and inspect the kits you are buying....another lesson learned). I had been going over reviews that mentioned the size of various parts of kitds and I figured it would fit? And I'll be damned, it actually does :D (which is good for the future conversions I have planned)

I need to fill in the front with some plasticcard, cut off the underside and chin from the Hasegawa kit to fill up the missing chin, and file down the first 2 roadwheels to glue the steel wheels to that. I can't change the 4 return rollers to 3 due to the way the PSC track is engineerd but thats no biggie to me.

And I'm doing all this because I feel rubber tracks are utter shite and cannot be trusted, and I like kitbashing. So there :P

Yesterday, I returned 2 Britannia Panzerjager 1's back to Grubby Tanks. I had bought these with some troops for the invasion of France and Barbarossa, but I found the quality to be so sub par I don't want them.

Image

Image

And then there were plenty of holes in the back and front you can't see in those pics.

I had high hopes that my first order in 4 years would see nice, clean casts, but tbh, they only got worse? I still have some casts in my spares box from the late owner and they are superior to these. Yes, I could go and clean all the holes, and yes, they are not that expensive. And yes, all of his metal casts except one were fine too. I'm just not going to buy any more Britannia vehicles period.

Also, I spent my holiday reading up on the aftermath of Market Garden, and then mainly the Overloon area and the thrust towards Meijel and Asten, south of Deurne (where I was born). Spotted this picture in The Forgotten Battle and I thought, that's no Sturmgeschutz. That's a Jagdpanzer IV with the 7.5 cm Pak 39 L/48 without a muzzle break if I'm not mistaken?

Image

Recently I picked up a Dutch book about 25 years liberation of Oploo (N/NW of Overloon) and this had a nice shot of a destroyed 250/251?

Image

It's listed as one of the 5-6 armoured cars that tried to escape to St. anthonis and the German lines and killed Lt Col Silvertop in the process (cause having a meeting in the middle of the road with high ranking officers is....well... ) A few of the armoured cars are listed as having a crew of 4, while others had 6-9 casualties...making me think it''s a mix of 251's and 250's?

I'm also curious to what the raised bit on top is?

That is a SdKfz 251/21. Thus the raised part.

No, that doesn't even remotely look like a /21. That raised part is set much further back. In my pic it is right above the viewports.

See? The /21 is set quite a bit back.

Then it get's really odd. It is part of the 107th Panzerbrigade and they got all brandnew equipment. Surely they would not have dismounted the gun in the short period between debarking at the Venlo railhead and moving up, and then back again through Gemert and Bakel towards Overloon, and make it so nice too?

It's a real shame we can't see more of the vehicle.

I agree Johan, there were a few odd 251's knocking about,it could even be a field mod of some kind. There may be other pics of it around but making certain it is this one will be hard.

The top piece looks almost like it is made of wood?

Some command variants done like that, but if it's a Stummel it should have a gun.....

That is what i thought as well mate, when i was doing a sdkfz251 command variant i found the same, that some command variants had a map table made out of wood there like that one.

I remembered it because the pic of the 234/1 with the schwebelafette I based my model on had a wooden piece under the gun at the front, and this looks similar....it also could have a hole in the middle....?...

After checking my Atumn Storm (which I should have done in the first place) it turns out its from a group of 5 251/21's (there is a larger picture in it that shows the entire vehicle (but again not the top) but the raised bit turns out to be a box of some kind. I'm assuming spare barrels then? - page 270) On page 272-273 they have one 251/21 being towed out of a house and that one has 2 boxes on top next to each other where the one on page 270 has one long continuos box. Parts, stowage or spare ammo?

So Arvaker, I'm sorry, you were right.

After some more researching the long top wooden case seems to be a Laufkasten for the 15cm barrel so that is now sorted too :) Now I'll just need more Drillings from SandS and I'll need to scratch several sets of 6 spare ammo cans for the rear of the vehicle.

Just ordered Kampfgruppe Walther after selling a ungodly amount of hobby stuff to fund my Crisis purchases and ended up with about 7x the amount of money I had envisioned/need. So I can actually afford the book.

My regular opponent for Frostgrave etc, who also has the attention span of a Gerbil on Red Bull, has kindly agreed to be my sparring partner in 20mm provided I supply painted troops for him. Fair enough. Gives me another reason to get stuff done.

After a small tease from Piers Afrika has now joined the list of infantry platoons to build. But just building platoons of German infantry isn't going to make for great games, a bit one sided.

I've got all of the books except the latest, so I've been browsing them for suitable first time scenario's for Modhail to play and don't require loads of stuff to be painted (and bought, ofcourse). Blitzkrieg has the Orlik's Cockroach scenario, for which I need roads and woods (which I have) and 3 German tanks and 3 Polish tankettes, so there is that. The French campaign's needs to many troops so I'll pass on that one for now. Barbarossa has a linked campaign and a couple of scenario's that are no help for a starter. Kursk of course has the classic Clash of Reconnaissance scenario but I'll wait for the release of the PSC 8 rads before doing that, and the rest of them are a bit much or involve me writing army lists and I'm feeling a bit lazy?

The cockroach scenario is a nice jumping off point for collecting a small force of Polish though. Or just leave it at that for now, I have not seen a lot of 20mm Polish infantry miniatures I actually like?

Meanwhile, I will have to look at looking at a platoon of Britannia FJ for late war as well, as they fought defensively in the Peel area. Not too thrilled with Grubby Tanks right now though, I returned my tanks almost 4 weeks ago and still no email or refund. Nor a reply to my email but I'm assuming he's at a show already. Really not what I was used to from Grubbs.

Right-o, after 6 more weeks of scrounging kits and models from various sources, I now have allmost all the stuff I need.

I'm going to go ahead with 2 scenario's and 2 side projects.

1. I've picked up a couple of boxes of TKS tankettes and Panzer 35(t) from First to Fight and I'll grab a PSC Panzer IV sprue to backdate into a B model. With very few models this will start off Erik with a basic understanding of the rules. Scenery wise I need to get more trees.

2. I've collected everything for the Hunting in Pairs scenario from WSS 87. I'll finish off the German side first, then do the British armour, then infantry and by the time I get to the carriers I'm hoping PSC will have released the variants (or will it be a upgrade pack? I dunno) so I can get those done too. Scenery wise I'm pretty much set. Being a dumbass though I accidentally orderd the wrong kind of Jagdpanther brass barrels (namely the Jagdpanzer ones.....that I already had!) so I'll have to remidy that in January.

3. Purely for my own pleasure, I picked some vehicles to build as additions to my German army, focussing on the Battle of the Bulge. Just a Dragon Ersatz M10 (by far the most money I have ever spent on a kit, even if it was on sale, and it will be kitbased on a PSC lower hull as well), a Americanised Stug III and a German truck with stars for now.

4. For a trade deal with Piers he ask me to go crazy on wrecks, fences and other battlefield litter. Fortunately for me and him (but not for my bank account) a few gents at our local 2nd hand kit FB group decided it was a good time to sell off a large quantity of 1/72 and 1/76 armour kits so that part is mostly sorted too.

Come January the only money I want to spend is on paints, specialist decals and the occasional bargain bin purchase on the sales groups, so I can fill up my Paypal account some more. And if all goes well, I will be going back to school starting January to get 2 more diplomas and First Aid retraining, so I won't have loads of time and will have to prioritise. So less time behind this blasted machine.

Which leaves me with Grubby. I did get a reply from him, but he stated he was very busy atm and had received my return to deal with it the next day. And that is the last I heard of him since November 5th. So...think of that what you will, but I think it's time for me to leave him behind and branch out miniature wise. I've excerted more then enough patience with him I think, so I will be spending my money elsewhere.

Now, to start my the holiday season by reading the Kampfgruppe Walther book. I can think of worse things :)

After a small altercation with a foodprocessor (hint: they have sharp blades) my finger is nicely healed up again, if a bit pinkish on top, so onwards, shall we?

I'll direct you to my Blog for a change. I'm terribly sorry to do so, but I've given up on Photobucket as it takes forever to load, doesn't accept changes anymore and is a downright pain to use. Till I find a proper replacement this will have to do, I'm afraid.

http://20mmandthensome.blogspot.nl/2017/01/orlicks-cockroach-polish-forces-kits.html

This time I'm looking purely at the kits I have picked up for my Poles (including some not needed for the scenario but useful for a Polish force none the less) and what they cost, and a good place to get them.

Edit: as it turns out I can link pics from my Blog so that's a start.
